Flight Disruptions in the Middle East: What Travelers Need to Know

Updated: June 23, 2025

Tensions are rising once again in the Middle East, and travelers are already feeling the impact. In response to escalating conflict between the U.S. and Iran, both Qatar and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have temporarily closed portions of their airspace—causing major disruptions across global air travel routes.

What’s Happening?

As of this week, over 700 flights have been canceled, delayed, or rerouted across the region, with Dubai being one of the hardest-hit transit hubs. The closures are a direct response to heightened military activity and the desire to keep civilian aircraft out of potentially dangerous zones.

Major airlines affected include:

  • Singapore Airlines

  • British Airways

  • Emirates

  • Air India

  • And several regional carriers

Some airlines have had to reroute through longer, costlier flight paths, while others have suspended certain services altogether until further notice.

Why This Matters (Even If You're Not in the Region)

The Middle East, particularly Dubai and Doha, are major international connecting hubs—especially for long-haul flights between North America, Europe, and Asia. Even if your final destination isn’t in the region, your itinerary may be affected if it includes a layover through:

  • Dubai International Airport (DXB)

  • Hamad International Airport (DOH)

  • Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH)

If you're traveling in the coming weeks, especially for business, leisure, or digital nomad relocation—check your flight status regularly.

What You Can Do

If you have upcoming travel booked:

  1. Check your airline's app or website for real-time updates.

  2. Monitor regional advisories and government travel alerts.

  3. Contact your travel agent or insurance provider about rebooking options or potential travel credits.
